Max Payne Remake 2022
When it comes to the best generation-defining games, games like Grand Theft Auto 3, Halo, or Final Fantasy X come to mind. But there is one project that is often overlooked – it’s “Max Payne”. Developed by Remedy Entertainment and publisher Gathering of Developers (prior to being acquired by Rockstar Games), the game was released in July 2001 on PC to rave reviews from critics and gamers alike. Soon the game has already visited the PlayStation 2 and Xbox.
Max Payne stood out from other contemporaries with its neo-noir style, artistic cutscenes, and gameplay, where the hero used time dilation similar to The Matrix. The game’s story was written by head writer Sam Lake while still in college. The story follows Max Payne, a New York City detective who joins the DEA after his family is murdered. He began his investigation and went to the drug dealers Valkyrie.
A field of such success, in 2003 a sequel called “Max Payne 2” was released. The third part appeared only in 2012, and Rockstar itself was already working on its creation. To this day, fans have been clamoring for a fourth game. But, Remedy and Rockstar went the other way and decided to remake the first two parts. Here’s what we know about the remake so far.
Remedy Entertainment approached Rockstar Games and requested that they transfer the rights to develop remastered games. Sam Houser, the co-founder of Rockstar, said it was not difficult to change some of the most popular games in history. “We were very excited to hear that Remedy wants to remake the original Max Payne,” Houser said. “We’re the biggest fans of their work ourselves, and we can’t wait to see an improved classic.”
But the release of remakes of the first two Max Payne will have to wait a long time. The remedy stated that they are still in the concept stage. This means that players can play updated projects only after a few years. Also in the press release, Remedy noted that it will be using its own Northlight game engine. This game engine powers several of the company’s previous projects, such as Quantum Break, Control, and Alan Wake. Northlight was also used to develop the single-player mode in CrossFire X, although the multiplayer module was already running on Unreal Engine 4.
Based on the characteristics of the engine, it is likely that Max Payne will be adapted to the next generation of devices, which will affect the visuals and control system. Also, we should expect the addition of photorealistic videos in which you can control the character. Remakes will appear in a few years, and it is likely that Remedy and Rockstar will focus on creating the most optimal product. Since these are some of the most loved games of the early 2000s, the company needs to make them for the players, not for the money. And if so, then the two parts will be exclusives to the next generation of consoles.
According to Remedy, the remakes will be released on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PS 5. The appearance on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 consoles, as well as the Nintendo Switch, can not be expected. Both parts will be combined into one project, and will not be sold separately. After the announcement of the Max Payne remake, it became clear that Rockstar was most interested in the work, and apparently, they will provide funding. The budget will go not only to game development, but also to marketing, publishing, and sales. Remedy will be able to receive sales royalties once Rockstar’s investment has paid off.
During the press release, it became known that the budget of the games will be the same as other AAA-class Remedy projects. By comparison, Control had a budget of $30 million. In turn, in “Quantum Break” he was from 10 to 20 million dollars. If you factor in these numbers, the Max Payne remakes will cost the company $20 million, give or take. But, after the overwhelming success of “GTA Online”, Rockstar can afford such amounts.
